‘Otai (Tongan Watermelon Drink)

A refreshing and authentic Tongan drink made with fresh watermelon, creamy coconut milk, and tangy lime juice. Perfect for hot days.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups fresh watermelon, seeded and cubed
  • 1 cup fresh coconut milk
  • 1/2 cup fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar, or to taste
  • 2 cups cold water
  • Pinch of salt
  • Ice cubes, for serving
  • Fresh mint sprigs, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Place the cubed watermelon, coconut milk, lime juice, water, sugar, and salt into a blender.
  2. Blend on high until completely smooth.
  3. Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into a large pitcher.
  4. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to chill.
  5. Serve over ice and garnish with mint and lime wedges.

Notes

– For a richer drink, use coconut cream instead of coconut milk. – Adjust sweetness to your preference. – This drink is best enjoyed fresh, within 24 hours.
